Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as cleaner or waitress in order for them to remain alive. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She quit school in just two short years to pursue acting. Her chosen path proved to be filled with challenges: In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a magazine about crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Then in NYC, she was employed at a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. She was an usherette during the early morning hours and also appeared at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first ever permanent acting job. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
